Modernization
of the Flat Iron Building
... Built in 1902, the building was one of the area's
major buildings until the Metropolitan Life Tower was erected in
1909. The Flatiron's location, across from Madison Square Park,
allowed the wind to swirl around the building, creating an updraft
which prompted the "23 Skidoo" term. Early in the 1900s,
swains would hang out at the corner with the hope of spotting a
trim ankle of a young lady as her skirt was lifted by the wind.
Engaged about
two years ago to investigate the second modernization of the elevators,
the consulting firm of DTM Inc., located in the area known
as College Point in New York City, came to the rapid conclusion
that replacement was the only option, and a study proceeded. Endless
discussion took place, and a proposal evolved to replace the elevator
with basement traction equipment. That was favored for a while,
since the upper floors (those above the elevators and accessible
only by stairs) were leased...
